Medicare Supplement plans, sometimes referred to as Med-Supp or Medi-Gap plans, are insurance plans offered by private insurers. These plans work in conjunction with Original Medicare. Med-Supp plans are designed to cover the gaps of Original Medicare coverage. If you have a Med-Supp policy, Medicare will be billed for what it covers and your policy will be billed for the remainder. You will be responsible to pay anything that is not covered by Original Medicare or your Med-Supp policy.
Part C refers to all plans offered by private insurance companies that step-in and replace Original Medicare.
When you enroll in one of these plans you are still responsible for paying your monthly Part B premium. You may have an additional monthly premium through the carrier, but some plans offer a $0 month additional premium. These plans may also offer coverage for services not covered under Original Medicare, such as: dental, eye exams, eyeglasses, chiropractic visits, and acupuncture. Many also encourage healthy living with gym membership plans. In most cases, your plan will also include prescription drug coverage in your monthly premium.
This part covers prescription drug coverage. If can be used in conjunction with Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement Plans, and some Medicare Advantage Plans. If you do not have an MAPD Plan or other credible coverage (such as through an employer), you do not want to put off getting Part D coverage. You will be assessed penalties if you sign up late for a plan.
